Sharon Corr – ‘Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime’

Those expecting Sharon Corr’s solo career to be merely a continuation of her family’s output on Talk on Corners and In Blue may well be disappointed with the lead single from Sharon’s debut solo record, Dream of You (due for release in Ireland next week, Friday, September 10th). However, those looking for breezy summery pop, will be anything but disappointed. Sharon’s cover of The Korgis’s huge 1980 hit is a sweltering, modern take on the well-known ballad.

Sharon released ‘It’s Not a Dream’ over a year ago, and since then fans have been avidly awaiting the follow-up. It’s a clever choice of single to precede the album, as it’s a well-known track, but not one that has been covered to death already. There’s been a few versions of the song released in the past three decades, but Sharon’s stands up alongside all of them. The only person to really make the song their own was Beck, when he covered it on the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind soundtrack.

Sharon was best known for being the violinist in the Corrs, and her fiddle has plenty of time to shine here. The musicianship on the song is strong. I’m not sure who exactly appears on this track, but there’s some fine names to be found on the album proper: Jeff Beck, Davy Spillane, John McSherry, and Máirtin and Gerry O’Connor.

The one negative thing about the song is that it’s overproduced. Even though the original is an eighties classic, there is far too much synth in the mix, and the echo-effect on the vocals would have been far better had it been backing singers instead. However, the song is a worthy attempt at a pop single from the lady who describes herself on her twitter profile (with 12,000+ followers) as “Musician, Violinist, Corr”.

Rating: ★★★☆☆
