Cignol – v0id EP

Cignol released brand new EP, v0id, on January 1st to little fanfare. Thus it went mainly unnoticed, but thanks to the lovely Harmless Noise blog, I (and many others) became aware of its existence.

The blurb for this record calls it “cinematic electronica with a sinister edge”, and is the perfect way to describe it. It’s hard for anyone to describe warm, enveloping sounds like this. Especially someone like me, who hasn’t been listening to reams of electronica before now. I do promise to become more knowledgeable as the year goes on though.

What I do know about this EP is that I like it. It has a gorgeous flow, not just the songs themselves, but the way the entire thing is ordered. Opener ‘Departures’ provides an embracing introduction, with its sweeping sounds and fuzzy soundscape. ‘Nebulae’ is an airy, atmospheric tune, while the standout, ‘Heretic’ is a brooding collection of dense beats. It’s a warm collection of tunes, with some darker undertones, held together by a meticulously constructed flow. Highly impressive.

The EP is the follow-up to last year’s Switching for a Living album, and is sure to win Cignol many more fans.
