Solo albums by anyone other than lead singers can often be disastrous. It’s probably why the Edge never got around to going out on his own. However, sometimes one will come along and excite you. Charlotte Hatherley (Ash) and Melissa Auf Der Maur (Hole) are two notable great examples that spring to mind. Jay Gonzalez is better known as the keyboard player in Southern Rock band Drive-By Truckers, but has announced his first solo album, Mess of Happiness, due for release November 11th (11/11/11 and all that).
‘The Will’ is the second teaser from the album, and can be downloaded for whatever price you like from Jay’s bandcamp page. It’s a great pop song, featuring heavy nods to the 1990s, well everything up until the Thrills released their second album. Why couldn’t they just quit after one?
